A Los Angeles County firefighter was killed in the Littlerock explosion

Authorities said a firefighter died after a burning tractor exploded at a quarry in Littlerock on Friday afternoon.

According to Los Angeles County Department officials, the explosion occurred around 2:10 p.m. at Hi-Grade Materials, 6500 E. Avenue T.

Firefighters had just received a report of a fire on a large articulated front-end loader, Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said during a news conference.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire or explosion that occurred, he added.

A second firefighter who stood near the explosion was taken to the hospital for evaluation, but is expected to be released Friday evening, according to Marrone.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Homicide Bureau are investigating along with counterparts from the sheriff’s arson and explosives unit, sheriff’s commander. – said Mark Reyes.

The services did not provide the name of the fallen firefighter until his family was notified.

Marrone described him as a 19-year veteran of the department, a husband, a father and a “wonderful man.”

“It’s just a tragedy,” the chief said. “We are certainly hurting and need your thoughts and prayers.”
