LITTLEROCK – A Los Angeles County firefighter was killed today when parts of a burning front-end loader exploded at a Littlerock quarry.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department did not immediately provide details of the explosion, which occurred in the 7300 block of Pearblossom Highway. Video footage from the scene shows a large front-end loader with flames still visible. One of the tires later caught fire, but fire crews maintained a safe distance from the vehicle, which was in an isolated area that did not pose a risk of the flames spreading to other vehicles.

What appeared to be a body draped in a flag was visible on a large pile of dirt nearby.

Reports from the scene indicate that crews initially arrived at the quarry after reports of a vehicle fire.

KCAL9 reported from the scene that an ambulance appeared to have taken at least one person to the hospital, but it was not immediately confirmed whether there were any other injuries. A cameraman present at the scene reported that a second firefighter had also died, but this information had still not been confirmed on Friday afternoon.

Fire officials said a news conference was scheduled for Friday afternoon outside Antelope Valley Medical Center.
