French rugby stars Oscar Jegou and Hugo Auradoi arrested after sexual assault allegations during South American tour

French rugby players Oscar Jegou and Hugo Auradou have been arrested in Argentina over allegations of sexual assault during their tour of South America.

France beat Argentina 28-13 last weekend in Mendoza and will play Uruguay in Montevideo on Wednesday before returning to Buenos Aires on Saturday to face Argentina.

Spurs Jegou and playmaker Auradou started Saturday’s match against Pumas, both making their senior international debuts.

However, on Monday, French Rugby Federation president Florian Grill confirmed that the pair had already been arrested.

Asked about the identity of the players involved, Grill told a news conference in Argentina: “They appeared in the (Argentine) press: Jegou and Auradou.

“There is an ongoing investigation. Jean-Marc (Lhermet, vice president of the FFR) and I have just flown in from Paris. If the facts are confirmed, they are incredibly serious.

“Our thoughts must be with the young woman. If, once again, this is true, it goes against everything that rugby does, builds and stands for, everything that the 2,000 grassroots clubs do that bring grassroots rugby to life on a daily basis.

“I don’t have any details. I can’t say what happened. The investigation is ongoing… They are at the police station. Someone from the delegation went to visit them to bring them some food. We will try to go back and see them too.”

Reuters contacted the local court to confirm the information.

Reuters was unable to contact the players, and neither the men nor their lawyers issued a statement.

“If the investigation confirms the alleged facts, they would constitute an unspeakable cruelty,” French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera wrote in a post on X.

“Our thoughts are with the victim. We thank Florian Grill for his sincere words and the emotions we all share this morning. I remain in contact with the federation and our embassy.”

The arrests come after defender Melvyn Jaminet was sent home from the tour on Sunday and suspended after a video of him making a racist comment was posted on social media.

The 25-year-old, who plays for top-14 club Toulon, was filmed and heard saying: “The first Arab I meet, I’ll headbutt him”, in a video that has been widely shared showing him saying.

Jaminet later apologized for his comments in an Instagram post.
