MOSCOW, July 9 (Bernama-Sputnik) — The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into Marine Le Pen, a member of the right-wing National Rally, on suspicion of irregularities in the financing of her 2022 presidential campaign, French media reported on Tuesday, Sputnik reports.

The investigation was launched following a complaint by France’s National Commission for Accounts and Campaign Financing (CNCCFP), which suspected other presidential candidates of illegal campaign financing but focused solely on Le Pen, news station BFMTV reported, citing sources.

French law prohibits candidates from exceeding a set spending limit during election campaigns and provides for the reimbursement of campaign costs if the necessary conditions are met. Otherwise, the CNCCFP can make changes to the election accounts, reduce the amount of compensation and, if necessary, refer the matter for investigation.

Le Pen said her presidential campaign cost between €800,000 ($865,912) and €1 million ($1.1 million) and was entirely financed by the party, while the French government was required to cover interest on loans taken out by political parties during the election.

The 2022 presidential election was held in two rounds in April 2022. Incumbent President Emmanuel Macron won the second round with 58.55 percent of the vote, while Le Pen won 41.45 percent. The French president is elected every five years. The next election will be held in 2027.
