Missing 14-year-old identified as body found on North Carolina beach

NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, North Carolina (WNCN) — A body has been found Sunday along the shore at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base was identified Monday as the missing Goldsboro teenager, officials said.

Mainor Perez Velasquez, 14, and his brother went into the water near New River Inlet on North Topsail Island on July 4, according to North Topsail Beach officials. A passing boater was able to rescue Mainor’s brother, but Mainor disappeared.

Mainor’s body was found after several days of searching around 9:45 a.m. Sunday at a military base near New River Inlet, according to a North Topsail Beach news release.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” city officials said.

Mainor attended Southern Wayne High School. GoFundMe has been set up by the living brother to his family.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Velasquez family during this difficult time,” North Topsail Beach said in a news release.

Camp Lejeune is located northeast of North Topsail Beach and covers the shoreline of the New River and Atlantic Ocean.
