French couple arrested for alleged sexual assault during tour in Argentina

Two French rugby players have been arrested in Argentina over allegations of sexual assault during their tour of South America, French Rugby Federation (FFR) president Florian Grill said on Monday.

France beat Argentina 28-13 last weekend in Mendoza and will play Uruguay in Montevideo on Wednesday before returning to Buenos Aires on Saturday to face Argentina in another test match.

“There is an ongoing investigation. Jean-Marc (Lhermet, vice president of the FFR) and I have just flown in from Paris. If the facts are confirmed, they are incredibly serious,” Grill told a news conference in Argentina.

“Our thoughts must be with the young woman. If, once again, this is true, it goes against everything that rugby does, builds and stands for, everything that the 2,000 grassroots clubs do that bring grassroots rugby to life on a daily basis.

“I don’t have any details. I can’t say what happened. The investigation is ongoing… They are at the police station. Someone from the delegation went to visit them to bring them some food. We will try to go back and see them too.”

Reuters contacted the local court to confirm the information.

The arrests follow defender Melvyn Jaminet being sidelined on Sunday and suspended from the competition after a video of him making a racist comment was posted on social media.

The 25-year-old, who plays for top-14 club Toulon, was recently widely shared in a video in which he said: “I’m going to headbutt the first Arab I meet.”
