President Joe Biden formally filed this week to nominate state Judge Gail A. Weilheimer for the U.S. Senate to replace the late U.S. District Judge Gene E. K. Pratter of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Pratter, a powerful figure in the federal judiciary, died in May at age 75. During 20 years as a federal trial judge appointed by former President George W. Bush, she oversaw numerous high-profile cases.
