A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a police officer was hit by a stolen car.

The 32-year-old police officer was hit by a Mercedes at around 7.30pm on Tuesday evening in south-west Edinburgh while walking.

The car had been stolen about half an hour earlier from Gorgie Road, close to where the attempted murder took place on Stenhouse Road.

Before the Mercedes hit the lamp post, several other cars were damaged in the attempted murder.

In the car where the theft took place was a 16-year-old boy who managed to escape the accident.

The 27-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder, theft of a motor vehicle, kidnapping, dangerous driving and other road traffic offences.

He is due in court on Thursday.

After the attack, the police officer was taken to hospital with serious injuries but has since been released.

Detective Inspector David McAlinden said: “This was a very serious incident and we continue to provide support to the officer and his family.

“I would like to thank members of the public for their quick response to assisting our colleague and assisting with the investigation at the scene.

“We are aware that a number of vehicles were damaged in the area during the incident and would encourage any witnesses or anyone with information who has not already spoken to police to come forward.
