Suspended sentence for Dundalk man who stole elderly woman’s handbag

A 44-year-old man who snatched a handbag from an elderly woman who had taken her and her husband’s Post Office pension has been given a 21-month suspended prison sentence at Dundalk District Court.

David Carroll, of Drive One, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft in relation to an incident in Louth Village on June 4, 2021.

Last week, the court heard testimony from the injured party who had just got into her car after collecting the couple’s pension when the accused opened the door and snatched her handbag, which contained a mobile phone worth €1,270 and a bank card.

The cash and personal items were never recovered.

Judge Dara Hayes said that while the incident undoubtedly had a significant impact on the victim, she had taken a very sympathetic attitude towards the defendant, who, the court heard, had co-operated with the police investigation and identified himself on the footage.

He had a string of convictions including serious assaults, theft and the sale or distribution of drugs.

Judge Dara Hayes noted the defendant had €700 at his disposal in court, was making good progress, was co-operating well with the Probation Service and had just completed a period of supervision.

The judge sentenced him to 21 months in prison, but said that despite his past, he had suspended the sentence in its entirety because the defendant had not reported to the police for some time, had started using the help of addiction treatment centres and was caring for his parents.

As part of his suspended sentence, David Carroll must maintain the peace and good behaviour for 21 months and follow the recommendations of a methadone treatment programme.
