A 30-year-old Fontana man died of health problems while the San Bernardino County sheriff was trying to put him in jail.

Joel Valencia was booked into the West Valley Detention Center a few minutes before midnight Friday in connection with a “domestic disturbance” when he “began to act unstable and upon medical examination, it was discovered that he had a rapid heart rate and required transport to the hospital,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

When he got to the hospital — it was already Saturday — “he became aggressive and suffered a medical emergency,” authorities added.

Despite life-saving measures, Valencia was pronounced dead. The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.
