Russia foils assassination attempt on high-ranking military officers

Russia said it had foiled an assassination attempt on three high-ranking army officers.

Russia’s internal security and counterintelligence service, the Federal Security Service (FSB), said a suspect had been arrested for allegedly planning to deliver three explosive devices to Defense Ministry officers. It is alleged that the assassination attempts were carried out on the orders of Ukrainian military intelligence.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported that the FSB also thwarted an attack on the Murmansk aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, commanded by Kyrylo Budanovo of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, that took place earlier this year.

Apparently a crew member was persuaded to sabotage the aircraft carrier.

The alleged attack comes after Russian attacks on several regions of Ukraine, including Kiev, earlier this week left dozens dead and more than 170 wounded.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko reported that the affected areas included the Dnieper, Kryvyi Rih and Donetsk regions.

Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Ukrainian military administration in Kryvyi Rih, declared a day of mourning in the central Ukrainian city after the attacks.

The Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described as “one of the most important children’s hospitals not only in Ukraine but also in Europe,” was also seriously damaged in the attacks.

“I saw injured doctors trying to save people and search for children,” said Ukrainian MP Maria Ionova, a member of the board of trustees of the children’s hospital Newsweek.

She added that at the time of impact there were 627 children in the hospital, eight of whom were injured.

“When we were transporting the children to the ambulances, all the corridors were covered in blood and the children were very scared. It was too much for them to have cancer and face such terrorism,” she said.

Speaking at the NATO summit in Washington yesterday, President Joe Biden said the United States and several other NATO nations would deliver “dozens” of air defense systems to Ukraine in the coming months.

“…The United States and partners intend to equip Ukraine with dozens of tactical air defense systems,” Biden said.

“These systems will further expand and strengthen the range of Ukraine’s air defense,” he added.
