Police say murders are down 50% in El Paso this year

An El Paso man is all smiles in his arrest photo where he was booked on murder charges in connection with a fatal shooting this week in the Northeast District.

Tristan Alexander Colgrove, 24, of northeast El Paso, was arrested by homicide detectives in connection with the shooting death of a 26-year-old man in the Logan Heights neighborhood on Monday, officials announced Wednesday, July 10.

The name of the man who was killed was not released pending notification of family. Police described him as a Northeast resident.

Police said the man was found dead at 6:15 a.m. Monday on the sidewalk near an alley in the 5300 block of Byron Street, near Fred Wilson Avenue. The man’s body was found as a result of a gunshot wound.

A possible motive for the fatal shooting has not been released. Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Unit are investigating.

Colgrove was arrested on murder charges Tuesday and booked into the El Paso County Jail in downtown El Paso. He is being held on $1 million bail, according to jail records, which list no prior arrests.

Colgrove, who has long, dark hair, a beard and an earring in one ear, smiles broadly in a photo taken at the time of booking.

As noted by officials with the El Paso Police Department, homicide cases are down 50% from last year. There have been 10 cases reported this year, compared to 20 reported at this time in 2023.
