5-year-old dies after being found in hot car in Omaha

Omaha police are investigating the death of a 5-year-old boy who was left for hours in a hot SUV on Wednesday.

According to Omaha Police Lt. Neal Bonacci, officers responded to the scene at about 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Muse Beauty Salon near 93rd and Binney streets.

Bonacci said someone found the boy in the Chevy Suburban and contacted authorities. The boy was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation before being taken to Children’s Nebraska, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy’s death may have been heat-related, Bonacci said, but police cannot confirm the cause of death until an autopsy is performed.

The temperature reached a high of 86 degrees just before 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Bonacci said investigators from the police’s Child Victims Unit are taking part in an investigation to determine whether a criminal act may have been the cause of the boy’s death.
