Memorial held for 25-year-old Oakland firefighter who drowned on San Diego beach

ALAMEDA, Calif. (KGO) — On Wednesday, the Oakland Fire Department will say goodbye to one of its own.

A memorial service for Caeden Laffan will be held aboard the USS Hornet in Alameda.

A 25-year-old firefighter drowned last month at a San Diego beach while swimming with a friend.

He was visiting town for the California Summer Firefighting Games.

His family has deep ties to the Oakland Fire Department. Laffan was a third-generation firefighter, his father being Oakland Fire Department Deputy Chief Sean Laffan. The 42-year-old died of a heart attack while on duty in 2020.

“We are all devastated, there is no other way to take this,” Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington said after the drowning. “Caeden was a rising star, a very bright man, we had big plans for him, his future, so this is incredibly tragic.”

The funeral service will begin at 12:00 noon.
