Wanindu Hasaranga steps down as Sri Lanka T20I captain

Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain after the team was knocked out of the 2024 Men’s T20I World Cup in the group stage last month.

Hasaranga has been the T20I coach for just six months since being appointed in January this year, when Dasun Shanaka’s tenure as captain of both Sri Lanka white teams ended. The all-rounder began his reign with a series win over Zimbabwe and then a 2-1 series win over Afghanistan ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Hasaranga’s resignation follows that of coach Chris Silverwood, who resigned from his role shortly after Sri Lanka were eliminated from the competition. Silverwood had been the team’s manager in all three formats since April 2022.

The 2024 T20 World Cup was Sri Lanka’s second consecutive disappointing tournament performance after finishing ninth in the 2023 World Cup. In the Caribbean, Sri Lanka lost to South Africa and Bangladesh in Group D of the tournament and finished three points behind second-placed Bangladesh, crashing out of the competition in the first stage.

While the two-game collapse they lost was a major reason for their early exit, senior players and team management spoke of the amount of travelling Sri Lanka had to do compared to other teams during the tournament. In the group stage, only Bangladesh travelled further than Sri Lanka and were one of only two teams to play their group matches at four different venues.

In a statement released by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board announcing his retirement, Hasaranga said: “Sri Lanka will always count on my best efforts as a player and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always.”

Sri Lanka Cricket have clarified that Hasranaga will remain an “important player” in their white-ball teams despite resigning as captain. A successor has not yet been named. The team will play a T20I series against India later this month.
