Northbound lanes of Northern Motorway reopen following serious multi-vehicle crash

A tearful witness described the scene: “As I came around the bend, I saw these cars in the air. One was literally floating in the air and the other was already rolling down the embankment.

“And as I was driving by, I saw one guy, he was pulling his kid out of the backseat of the car. I really feel sorry for that family.

“(The cars) were smashed. One was upside down, the other was right side up,” she said.

Auckland’s Northern Motorway has been closed following a crash on Thursday.

Another woman driving by said she only realised something was wrong when paramedics drove past her.

“As I approached the accident scene, I saw one vehicle hit the roof of the other and spun around.

“The rear of one car hit the roof of a vehicle and a short distance away there was a second vehicle whose front and rear were crushed.

“I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Northbound lanes of the Northern Motorway in Auckland are closed and traffic is being diverted.

The fourth witness said Herald saw three “badly damaged cars, two of which appeared to have overturned.”

A fifth witness testified that as he drove past the crash site to the south, he saw about a dozen emergency vehicles at the scene, including a rescue helicopter.

NZTA said the section of road reopened at about 6pm.

Police were first called to the crash at 2:05 p.m. and heard initial reports of serious injuries, but these were downgraded after paramedics assessed the victims.
