Bihar: A Chinese man who illegally entered India has died after trying to commit suicide in Muzaffarpur jail.

A Chinese man accused of illegally entering India died on Tuesday after allegedly attempting suicide in a jail in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, authorities said.

Li Jiaqi from China’s Shandong Province was arrested on June 6 near Laxmi Chowk in the Brahmapura Police Station area for not having valid travel documents, including a visa. A map of China, a mobile phone and currencies of China, Nepal and India were found in his possession, he added.

A case was registered under the Foreigners Act, 1946, following which he was lodged in Amar Shaheed Khudiram Bose Central Jail, they added.

“On June 7, he was found injured and unconscious in the toilet of a prison hospital after he tried to cut vital parts of his body with broken glasses. He was immediately taken to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, near the jail. authorities, where he died on Tuesday as a result of his injuries,” reads a statement issued by the hospital.
