A Chinese man held for illegal entry dies after attempting suicide in a Bihar jail

A Chinese national died on Tuesday after an apparent suicide attempt in a jail in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, officials said. The man, identified as Li Jiaqi from China’s Shandong province, was detained for illegally entering India and not having valid travel documents. Li Jiaqi was arrested on June 6 near Laxmi Chowk, within the limits of Brahmapura police station.

Li was charged under the Foreigners Act 1946 and imprisoned in the Amar Shaheed Khudiram Bose Central Prison.

Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Kumar confirmed the arrest and recovery of items belonging to Li Jiaqi. “The Chinese man was arrested for not having valid travel documents, including a visa. A case was initiated against him under the relevant articles of the Act on Foreigners,” the SSP reported.

According to officials, on June 7, Li was found unconscious and seriously injured in a prison hospital toilet. He apparently used broken glasses to injure himself.

Jail authorities immediately shifted him to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur. However, on Tuesday, Li died of his injuries.

“On June 7, he was found injured and unconscious in the toilet of a prison hospital after he tried to cut vital parts of his body with broken glasses. He was immediately taken to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, near the jail. authorities, where he died from his injuries on Tuesday,” the hospital reported.
