One person is dead in an officer-involved shooting in Opelika

Opelika police have released new details about Tuesday’s officer-involved shooting on I-85.

Officials say at approximately 2:35 p.m., officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on I-85 involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they found a man armed with a knife. The incident ultimately resulted in an officer-involved shooting. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

As per standard protocol in such cases, the State Bureau of Investigation takes over the case.

Once the investigation is complete, the results will be forwarded to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office, which will present them to the Lee County Grand Jury.
