17-year-old arrested in DUI crash that killed husband and wife in Ocala: police

A 17-year-old was arrested Tuesday in connection with a February crash that killed a husband and wife in Ocala, according to police.

According to the Ocala Police Department, the teen faces several charges, including two counts of DUI, two counts of DUI, and three counts of DUI causing property damage. FOX 35 is choosing not to name the suspect due to his age.

Police said the crash occurred on Feb. 20 around 8:30 p.m. near the 1500 block of SE 36th Ave. in Ocala.

FOX 35 previously reported on the incident, saying police were looking for relevant surveillance footage during the investigation.

According to police, the couple’s car burst into flames. The man was thrown from the vehicle and the woman was still trapped inside. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The teenager suffered serious injuries in the accident and was taken to a local hospital.

Investigators determined that the 17-year-old was driving at a speed of over 200 km/h moments before the accident. “There were no skid marks,” police added.

According to police, when he was brought to the hospital his blood alcohol level was 0.188, more than twice the legal limit.

“The Ocala Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends affected by this tragedy,” the Ocala Police Department said in a statement. “Alcohol-related accidents have serious consequences for our community. We take these cases seriously and strive to bring justice to the victims and their loved ones. We urge everyone to make responsible decisions when driving and never drive under the influence of alcohol.”
